The Project
Brutal is a side project of mine born from the desire to do something out of my comfort zone. And what better way to achieve this than by designing a website that eschews all the norms and breaks the mold?
I set about designing a website using brutalist architecture as my inspiration. Whilst the design does away with what is considered the norm in web design, under the hood, it works exactly as any website should: it’s responsive, accessible, fast and easy to edit and manage.
The brutalist design lends itself well to various applications in the online world, including ecommerce, brochure and photography websites and, is infinitely adaptable. The stripped back design allows the content and imagery to speak for itself.
The Result
Brutal has been a modest success, and I have sold over 300 copies to people across the globe. Not only did it win the prestigious One Page Love award, but it has also been featured on multiple websites as an exemplary example of brutalist web design.
It has connected me with startups and new clients from all over the world whom I have worked with to adapt and develop the template to their requirements.
Recognition and sales aside, the most rewarding aspect of this passion project was stepping out of my comfort zone and doing something bold and different. While the process was challenging, it also helped me develop my design and development skills, which I’ve carried over to many projects since.
